DURATION : 40 MINUTES
LESSSON OUTLINE :
Activity 1  What's in the Title?                              
1.      Guide all students to talk about the title, "Gadgets and Gizmos".
2.      Ask the following questions to elicit responses from the students:
◦  What does the word, “gadgets” mean?
◦  What does the word, “gizmos” mean?

Activity 2  Name the Gadgets
1.      Draw all students' attention to the gadgets on the page.
2.      Ask the following questions to elicit responses from the students.
•       What gadgets do you see in the picture?
•       What are the uses of the gadgets?
•       Can you share with the class other gadgets that you know?
•       Can you share with the class some gadgets that you use?
•       Why do we use gadgets?

Activity 3  Gadgets Around Us
1.      Encourage all students to talk about the gadgets in their homes and school.
2.      Ask students the following questions to elicit responses:
•       What are the gadgets in your home?
•       What are the gadgets in your school?
•       Who uses these gadgets?
•       Why do they use these gadgets?

1.              To say aloud the names of the gadgets in the kitchen
2.              To build vocabulary
3.              To pronounce the targeted vocabulary
DURATION : 40 MINUTES
LESSSON OUTLINE :
Activity 1  Gadgets in the Kitchen
1.      Get students to look at the picture.
2.      Ask students the following questions to elicit responses:
     What do you see in the picture?
     What is the lady doing?
     What are the gadgets in the kitchen?

Activity 2  Listen and Say Aloud
1.      Ask students to work in pairs. The students look at the picture again.
2.      Play the Audio-Video DVD. Allow students to listen and point to the gadgets that they hear.
3.      Practise saying aloud the name of the gadgets.
4.      Pause after each gadget to allow all students to internalise the targeted vocabulary.
5.      Ensure that all students participate actively.  Replay if necessary.

Activity 3  Uses of Kitchen Gadgets
1.      Get students to look at the gadgets in the picture.
2.      Ask students these questions:
•       Which gadget do you have in your house?
•       What do you use the gadget for?
•       What other gadgets do you have in your house?

2.              To practise using the sentence patterns used for describing the uses of a gadget
DURATION : 80 MINUTES
LESSSON OUTLINE :
Activity 1  One, Two, Three, Smile!
1.      Draw students' attention to the pictures on the page.
2.      Get students to predict what the video is about by asking the following questions:
•       What do you see on this page?
•       What do you think this video is about?
3.      Play the audio-video DVD.  Students listen to and watch the video.

Activity 2  Pause and Practise
1.      Play the video and pause at the following sentence patterns:
•       It can …
•       You can ...
2.             At every pause, teacher initiates a discussion. The discussion is to help students see and to be aware of the sentence patterns used for talking about the uses of  a gadget.
3.      Get students to respond or retell the situations in the video at the pauses selected to encourage the use of the sentence patterns.
4.      Ensure that all students participate actively.  Replay and pause when necessary.

                Activity 1  Then and Now                      
1.      Draw students' attention to the gadgets on the page.
2.      Ask students the following questions:
     What gadgets do you see on this page?
3.      Get students to work in pairs.  Each pair chooses one gadget.
4.      Students talk about how the gadget is the same or different.
5.      Guide students to look at and talk about the following aspects of the gadgets:
•       Size
•       Weight
•       Physical appearance
•       Uses
6.      Teacher models the sentence patterns to guide students in sharing their ideas in English.
Example:  Telephone
•       The telephone was big.
•       Now, the telephone is small.

Activity 2  Sharing Time
1.      Get students to take turns to share the information gathered during the discussion with the class.
2.      Ensure that every student gets an opportunity to share.

4.              To practise the sentence patterns related to the topic

DURATION : 80 MINUTES
LESSSON OUTLINE :
Activity 1  Let's Innovate!
1.      Draw students' attention to the picture.
2.      Ask the following questions to elicit responses:
     What do you see in this picture?
     What are the boys doing?
3.             Tell students that they are going to participate in a science competition for “Innovation Week”. They will invent a gadget. They will prepare a presentation to share their ideas with the class.
4.      Get students to work in groups of five.
5.      In groups, get students to talk about a gadget they would like to invent.
6.      Guide students in the discussion by giving the following guidelines and sentence patterns:
•       To suggest the gadget
I suggest we make ...
•       To state reason
You can use this gadget to ...
•       To refute
I agree with your idea. / I do not agree with your idea.
7.      Choose and decide the gadget they would like to invent.
8.      Ask students to draw this gadget on a poster, without using any words in the poster. All the presentations are in pictorial form.

Activity 2  Showcase It!
1.      Invite students to present their posters.
2.             Every member of the group must present one aspect of the gadget orally, using the poster as a guide. They must not read out from a script.
3.      Encourage and guide the students to say why they have designed that gadget.
4.      Get students to vote on the best design and give reasons for their choice.
5.      Ensure all groups get the opportunity to present their designs.
Suggested activities:
•       Display the posters in the class English Corner.
•       Using recycled materials, ask students to design/invent a gadget to be used in class.
