LEARNING OUTCOMES/OBJECTIVES
1.              To activate background knowledge on different types of farming
2.              To talk about where and how plants and vegetables are grown
3.              To identify and talk about different types of farming.
DURATION : 40 MINUTES
LESSSON OUTLINE :

Activity 1  What's in the title?
1.      Guide all students to talk about the title, 'Food from Plants'.
2.      Ask students the following questions:
◦  What does the word 'food' mean?
◦  What does the title, 'Food from Plants' mean?
◦  How can we get food from plants?
◦  What types of food can we get from plants?

Activity 2  Food from Plants
1.      Draw all students' attention to the stimulus.
2.      Get students to talk about the pictures. Ask the following questions:
     What do you see in the pictures?
     What types of plants/vegetables can we grow using these farming techniques?

Activity 3  Bingo!
1.      Get students to draw one type of fruit and one type of vegetable that they like.
2.      Get students to move around and find 3 friends who like the same types of fruits and vegetables and the reasons why they like them.
3.      Students need to show the fruit and vegetable drawn on the piece of paper and say aloud the names of the fruit and vegetable.
4.      Guide students to ask and answer the following questions when seeking out their friends.
•       What fruit do you like?
•       Why do you like this fruit?
•       What vegetable do you like?
•       Why do you like this vegetable?
5.      When students have found the 3 friends, they shout out, 'Bingo'.
6.      Get the winning group to share their findings with the class.

3.              To pronounce the targeted vocabulary
DURATION : 40 MINUTES
LESSSON OUTLINE :
Activity 1  Colours, Shapes and More ...
1.      Get students to look at the collage of pictures on the page.
2.      Ask the following questions:
◦  What do you see in pictures 1 to 14?
◦  What are the names of the fruits or vegetables?
◦  What are the colours of the fruits or vegetables?
◦  What are the shapes of the fruits or vegetables?

Activity 2  Listen and Say Aloud
1.      Play the Audio-Video DVD to allow students to listen to and practise saying aloud the names of the fruits and vegetables.
2.      Pause after each picture to allow all students to internalise vocabulary.
3.      Ensure that all students participate actively.   Replay if necessary.

Activity 3  Guess the Food
1.             Divide the class into 4 groups to play this guessing game. This game requires the teacher to give 3 points for every correct answer a group give.
2.      Now, play the Audio-Video DVD and randomly select the pictures.
3.             Each member of the group takes turn to give the correct answer for the pictures.  For a correct answer given the first time, the group gets 3 points. When the member in the group does not know the answer, another group member is allowed to help.  If the answer given by the other group member is correct, the group gets 1 point

2.              To practise using the sentence patterns to describe fruits and vegetables.
DURATION : 80 MINUTES
LESSSON OUTLINE :
Activity 1  What's GMF?
1.      Draw students' attention to the pictures on the page.
2.      Get all students to predict what the video is about by asking the following questions:
◦  What do you see on this page?
◦  What do you think this video is about?
◦  What is GMF?
3.      Play the audio-video DVD.  Get students to watch the video.

Activity 2  Pause and Practise
1.      Play the audio-video DVD and pause at the following sentence patterns:
•       I've read that genetically modified tomatoes taste as good as natural tomatoes …
•       … are just as firm as …
•       As juicy as ...
2.      At every pause, teacher initiates discussion. The discussion is to help students see and be made aware of the sentence patterns.
3.      Get students to respond or retell the situations in the video at the pauses selected to encourage the use of the sentence patterns.
4.      Ensure that all students participate actively.  Replay and pause if necessary.

1.      Draw students' attention to the pictures.
2.      Ask the following questions:

•       Can you tell me the types of products that come from this plant?
3.      Get students to work in pairs.  Students look at the pictures and share what they see in the pictures.
4.      Guide students to ask and answer the following questions for Pictures B, C and D.
•       What do you see in Picture B?
•       Can you tell me the types of products that come from this plant?
5.      Invite all students to share with the class the usefulness of plants B, C and D.

Activity 2  Let's Illustrate! (B4DL1E1)
1.      Get each pair to decide which plant (B, C or D) they would choose as the most useful plant.
2.      In pairs, they present the uses of the plant using illustrations.
3.             Get students to group with other pairs of students and share their views and opinions. They must give reasons for their choice and defend their views.
4.      Get some students to share their findings with the class.

Activity 1  Trigger Your Senses
1.      Draw students' attention to the picture on the page.           .
2.      Ask the following questions:
◦  What do you see in the picture?
◦  What are the students doing?
3.      Lead and encourage students to make a choice on a plant that they want to talk about and present in the class.

Activity 2  Show and Tell
1.      Get students to choose a plant or fruit that they want to share with their friends.
2.      Get students to talk about the plant or fruit based on the following:
•       shape
•       colour
•       smell
•       taste
•       uses of the plant
3.      Encourage students to prepare a chart or bring along their plants or fruits during the individual presentation.
4.      Invite all students to take turns to show and tell in groups.  Guide students to do the following during their presentations.
•       Greet the audience
•       Introduce themselves
•       Introduce the topic
•       Talk about the plant or fruit and its uses
•       Answer questions posed by the group members
•       Thank the audience
Example:
Good morning, teacher and friends.  I have brought a grapefruit.  The skin is yellow and the flesh is magenta.  The shape of this fruit is round. This fruit is juicy but it tastes sour.  It contains a lot of Vitamin C and is good for health.  Thank you.
5.      Ensure that every student is given the opportunity to present.
6.             Encourage other students to ask questions during the show and tell sessions. This is to ensure that all students are actively involved during the show and tell.

Activity 1  Work It Out!
1.      Draw students' attention to the picture on the page.
2.      Ask the following questions:
•       What do you see in the picture?
3.      Tell students they are going to create a folio.
4.      Get students to work in groups of five.
5.      Each group chooses one method of farming to be presented in the poster.
Example:
•       Genetically Modified Food (GMF)
•       Hydroponic farming
•       Organic farming
•       Natural farming
6.      Get each group to discuss the process involved and create a poster on the selected choice of farming.
7.      Guide students to present the following in their posters.
•       Choice of farming technique
•       Steps involved in the farming process
•       Advantages of this farming method
•       Types of produce
8.             Remind students that every member of the group must be actively involved in preparing the presentation and each of them must be given the opportunity to present.

Activity 2  Present It!
1.      Invite the groups to present their posters.
2.      Get students to vote for the best poster and give reasons for their choice.
3.      Ensure all groups get the opportunity to present their posters
